Improving Sight Reading Skills with Oboe Duets

While I was teaching at the Bocal Majority Oboe & Bassoon camp last week, I noticed a common theme among all of my students.  All of the oboe students were terrified of sight-reading and none of them had any good method for tackling the issue.  So I decided it would be good idea to dedicate a whole class on sight reading by using my 10 Intermediate Oboe Duets book.

I was assigned two oboe girls from the premier group so I decided they would alternate playing 1st and 2nd oboe.  We then outlined my 4 steps you must take before sight reading a piece.

  1. Observe Key Signature
  2. Observe Time signature
  3. Look out for any accidentals or tricky fingerings
  4. Looks out for any tricky rhythms

The reason why this book works for this type of exercise is because the students are exposed to different meters, key signatures, rhythms and musical styles.

So if you are a private lesson teacher or band director I would highly recommend this book for improving sight-reading.
