Playing oboe duets in lessons
A great way for young students to learn how to pick up on the nuances of an advanced musician is to play oboe duets with them. I have learned through experience that playing oboe duets with my students really elevates their playing to a whole other level. They instinctively start to match what I am doing musically in terms of phrasing, tapering ends of notes and producing good tone. I think when students are playing with their peers it is easier to match the quality of musicianship around them. Most kids primarily play in a school band setting, which are often times loud and unpolished. But when you are in an intimate chamber music setting with just two people the expectations are higher because everything is exposed. So my suggestion for private lesson teachers out there is to carve out time in each lesson to read through a couple of short duets. You will be amazed by the results.
